Spay & Neuter
Every year, thousands of stray and unwanted animals are euthanized in shelters across the United States. Sadly, many of these euthanasias are the avoidable result of owners failing to spay and neuter their pets. At Chattanooga Holistic Animal Institute, we strongly believe in the positive impact that pet spay and neuter surgery provides, not only to help control the pet population but also to enhance the health and well-being of your pets.
Thank You for Not Littering!
When you choose to spay or neuter your pet, you are taking an essential step towards reducing the number of unwanted animals. But beyond population control, spaying and neutering offer numerous health benefits that can improve and extend your pet’s life.
Health Benefits of Spaying and Neutering
Reduction in Cancer Risk
- Females (Spaying): Spaying significantly reduces the risk of mammary gland tumors. It also prevents ovarian and uterine cancers.
- Males (Neutering): Neutering eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and reduces the risk of prostate problems.
Prevention of Infections
- Females: Spaying prevents pyometra, a potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus.
- Males: Neutering helps prevent infections and other issues related to the prostate and testicles.
Behavioral Benefits
- Reduction in Roaming: Unspayed or unneutered pets often have a strong urge to roam, leading to accidents, fights, or getting lost.
- Decrease in Aggression: Neutered male pets are often less aggressive and less likely to fight with other animals.
- Less Marking: Neutering reduces marking behaviors in male dogs and cats.
Ideal Timing for Pet Spay and Neuter Surgery
For cats after 6 months. For small dogs they can be spayed after their first heat cycle or they can be spayed/neutered at 8 or 9 months of age. Larger dogs are not recommended to be altered until 1-2 years of age depending on the breed.
Soft Tissue Surgery
Pet soft tissue surgery encompasses a range of procedures aimed at treating conditions involving the skin, muscles, tendons, and internal organs. Our skilled veterinary surgeons perform these surgeries to address issues such as tumor removal, wound repair, hernia correction, and organ biopsies. Utilizing advanced techniques and state-of-the-art equipment, we ensure the highest level of care and precision. Each surgery is tailored to meet the specific needs of your pet, minimizing discomfort and promoting a swift recovery. Post-operative care includes pain management, monitoring, and follow-up consultations to ensure optimal healing and overall health. Dental Care
Pet dental care isn’t extra; it’s essential! Studies have shown that periodontal disease is one of our pets’ most common health problems—and it doesn’t just affect your pet’s mouth. Severe periodontal disease can also lead to organ damage, pain, and a reduced quality of life for your furry friend.
It’s More than Fresh Breath
Proper dental care for your pet is about much more than ensuring those kisses stay sweet—although that is a nice perk. Dental disease is one of the most common health issues our pets face, and recent studies have shown that by the time a dog or cat is three years old, they’re showing some signs of periodontal disease. As periodontal disease advances, it leads to pain, tooth loss, and a decreased quality of life. Additionally, the harmful bacteria in the mouth spread to other parts of the body, causing damage to a pet’s kidneys, liver, and heart.
Chattanooga Holistic Animal Institute offers comprehensive pet dental care services, including:
- Dental exams
- Cleaning and polishing
- Dental X-rays
- Extractions
Signs your pet might have a dental issue include:
- Drooling, chewing oddly, or dropping food from the mouth
- Reduced appetite or behavior changes
- Facial swelling
- Bad breath
- Loose, broken, or discolored teeth
- Bloody saliva
- Pawing or rubbing at their mouth
Preventative Dental Care
We recommend annual dental exams for all pets in addition to professional dental procedures, as your veterinarian recommends. Regular brushing with pet-friendly toothpaste, providing dental chews and toys, and incorporating dental diets into your pet’s nutrition plan can also help reduce plaque and tartar buildup. If you’re unsure how to get started brushing your pet’s teeth at home, we’re here to help. Ask us for a demo on your next visit!
